We created these tenugui to commemorate our 20th anniversary and to express our gratitude to those who have supported us. The design features cats as a nod to Yushima Island in Amakusa, which is now known as "Cat Island." Yushima is a small island with a population of 300 people and 230 cats. It's located halfway between Amakusa, Kumamoto Prefecture, and Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture. The island was once called "Dangojima," or "Council Island," because a strategy meeting was held there during the Shimabara Rebellion. Each cat on the island has a name, and the island was recently featured in NHK's "World of Cats" hosted by Teruo Iwamoto. The cats are very friendly and love to cuddle, so you're sure to be surrounded by them. We decided to donate a portion of the proceeds from the tenugui to the local community development support team that cares for the cats on Yushima Island.
